Smartphone Review: Motorola Droid RAZR

Motorola was near death in 2004 when it released the first RAZR. Never before had there been such a sleek and slim flip phone, and it became the forerunner of the slim design ideas for phones. As the SLVR and KRZR followed, Motorola knew it had to change the lineup. Unfortunately for Motorola, Apple released the iPhone, straight out of left field, leaving the company reeling. On 11/11/11 at 11:11:11 a.m., Motorola unleashed the Droid RAZR, its merging of the RAZR brand with the Droid series.

The Droid RAZR comes in at 7.1 mm thick, making it a slim, sleek and sexy smartphone. Motorola announced that the Droid RAZR was the slimmest smartphone available. The front of the Droid RAZR is a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Advanced display, which is bright, color, vibrant and sharp. Underneath the display are four Android shortcut keys for menu, home, back and search. There’s a small pinhole-sized dot above the display that is a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera. The left side has a microSD card port while the right side has the volume controls and the power / lock button. The top has the 3.5 mm headphone jack, a microUSB port and a micro-HDMI port. The back is kevlar coated and it doesn’t have a battery cover, as the battery cannot be removed.

The Droid RAZR has a dual core 1.2 GHz processor which makes the phone snappy and quick. It comes preinstalled with Android 2.3.5, which is the current latest version of Android. The non removable battery doesn’t last as long as one would expect, especially with the 4G connectivity enabled. The call quality is great, with no distortion or echoes. The data speeds on Verizon’s 4G LTE network were also above average, with videos streaming fast and web pages loading quickly.

The Android interface is easy to use and learn on the Droid RAZR. The snappiness also helps to enhance the user interface. The 4.3-inch display also offers lots of room for both hands to use and interact with the smartphone. There is a small overlay installed by Motorola, but it’s a very light version of the user interface and is non-obtrusive.

The Droid RAZR comes equipped with an 8 megapixel camera, capable of taking pictures and video that are equivalent to point and shoot cameras, if not better. The front facing 1.3 megapixel camera is also decent for taking self photos and for video chatting. The Droid RAZR is also capable of roaming on international GSM networks, though it cannot connect to U.S. GSM networks. The Droid RAZR also offers encryption, PIN lock, remote enabling and disabling of the camera and Wi-Fi. It can also attach itself to Motorola accessories such as the Lapdock and HD Station.
