Small Changes that Make a Big Difference in Your Closet

Do you ever get fed up with your closet? You know, the clothes in the floor that fell off the hanger? What about the mountains of unsorted socks? The stacks of sweaters that have turned into a balled up mess. Well, here are some very inexpensive fixes I found that you might enjoy.

Problem 1: Clothes that fall off the hangers. It can be very frustrating when you barely touch a blouse and it slips off the hanger onto the floor. Personally, I got really sick of putting items back on hangers. Then one day it occurred to me to that the few hangers I had with rubber tips on them hung onto to the clothes securely. I dug through my desk for a pack of rubberbands and wrapped a rubber band around the end of each wooden (and plastic) hanger. Now my items stay securely in place.

Problem 2: Mountains of unsorted socks. I began keeping unsorted socks in large Rubbermaid tubs years ago. If we needed socks, we would go diffing and find what we needed. It seemed like a good idea until my teenagers began interrupting me while I was getting dressed to raid the sock bin in my closet. It had become a big heaping mess of socks, in the bin, over the side of the bin, and on the floor around the bin. To remedy this problem, I gave everyone their own socks and a pack of safety pins. When the socks come off, they must be pinned together. In addition, I marked the toe of white socks with different colors so that it was clear what belonged to whom. This way, socks stay matched and they get claimed quickly instead of ending up on my closet floor.

Problem 3: Messy stacks of sweaters. At the top of the closet, I had messy piles of sweaters and miscellaneous items. I gained control over it by purchasing wire closet baskets that can be used to make stacking or hanging bins. I arranged these on the top shelf, spaced out so that I could put a stack of items in each basket, and a stack of items in between each basket.

It has been a month since I have made these changes and am surprised that we have not elapsed back into a mess. I am very happy with the outcome.
