Sample research methodology for first year High School students as respondents of thesis study

Focuses of the study were the students in first year, and they considered themselves as the target population with sampling methods specified. The freshmen were exposed to the special program, with inclusive standards of tests, based upon the identified needs of the two classes while the researcher had undergone exclusive criteria in implementing the accepted standards used also in making decisions or judgments about the tests given to the pilot classes. After the researcher had conducted a series of tests to the aforementioned subjects, 75 students differed themselves in terms of their intellectual abilities. The class schedule is daily, Monday to Friday.

Research Design

Descriptive Survey Method was used in this study. It evaluated the effectiveness of structured macro-skills’ development lessons in English, and ascertained the efficacy of learning approach on the knowledge and skills, which geared directly towards employing ideas, methods, or materials that have not been tried before. It was also a technique used for describing qualitatively the general characteristics and tendencies of a group. Questionnaire, actual conduct of study (pretest and posttest), document analysis and observation were used as the methods for gathering data.

Research Environment

This study was conducted at Minglanilla Science High School, Poblacion Ward I, Minglanilla, Cebu. Minglanilla National Science High School consisted of 2 sections in first year, namely, 37 students in I-Gold, and 38 students in I-Copper, for they reached a total number of 75 as student-entrants of said science high school. The study comprised only 2 sections: I-Gold and I-Copper. In first year section Gold, there were 38 students of which 20 are boys and 18 are girls while in first year section Copper, there were 37 students of which 14 are boys and 23 are girls.

The school is the center of all the schools in municipality of Minglanilla since it is singled out as a science high school. All activities are to be held in this school. School principals and subject area coordinators are conferring to one another and all are subject to the lead principal’s supervision/direction. The name of the school as the place of study is Minglanilla National Science High School. It is the public science school in the municipality of Minglanilla in the South. The principal allowed the researcher to conduct the study under her present administration of said learning institution.

Research Subjects

The respondents were selected first year students of Minglanilla National Science High School: 41 girls and 34 boys both in I-Gold and I-Copper. In first year Gold alone, it had 18 girls and 20 boys as respondents while in first year Copper alone, it had 23 girls and 14 boys. All of them got a total of 75 as subjects of the study by the researcher concerned.

Majority of them were 12-13 years old while a few have ages 11 and 14. 6 of them graduated valedictorians and 8 graduated salutatorians from their elementary years. 75 students as research respondents were under descriptive survey method of study, and they were called pilot students who were enrolled in first year of Minglanilla National Science High School.

Research Instruments

The researcher initially engaged in average and above-average students’ viewpoints, studies, etc. in order to get broad notions about the problems they have encountered academically inside the classrooms for the implementation of the program. The problems they have cited and other data gathered were integrated into a questionnaire, which is fanned out to respondents for validation.

A research-made or self-made type of examination was singled out in preparation for the pretest and posttest, including the record sheet as instrumentally utilized for the seventy-five (75) student-entrants in the two pilot classes. The prepared pretest and posttest were based on the intelligence quotients, modules or short courses of research study. They were aimed at determining the knowledge of English, particularly the knowledge of structured English lessons – given the test with a total of one hundred (100) items each.

The pretested rubric was used on the criteria, which is set to determine the skills in communication and structured English lessons. Finally, a record sheet was also used to reflect the scores of the students in the pretest and posttest for data analysis and documentation.

Research Procedures

To determine the efficacy and interventions of teaching-learning process between the respondents and teacher as the researcher of this study, here are all instructions utilizing the language teaching, namely, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Likewise, all instructions are specifically used as interventions of the study by the researcher based on the macro-skills teaching-learning performance.
