Review: E.L.F. Black Liquid Eyeliner

Of all my greatest ventures, finding a good liquid eyeliner is at the top of my list — aside from cheesecake-flavored lip gloss and trying not to look ghastly pale, that is. I also can’t justify spending more than several dollars on a quality liquid eyeliner for various reasons, which mostly adds up to me just being cheap.

A month ago, I thought I hit the jackpot: During a routine trip to Target, I stumbled upon the E.L.F. makeup collection in — you guessed it –the makeup aisle. In case you aren’t aware, E.L.F. promotes itself as a cheap, high quality makeup company, which is an oxymoron, but let’s not argue this point. Of the many items I found in this aisle, their liquid black eyeliner intrigued me the most, hence why I’m doing this review.

E.L.F. Black Liquid Eyeliner: The Good and Bad
Since I first purchased E.L.F.’s black liquid eyeliner a month ago, I’ve noticed two distinct features: it’s a very decent eyeliner and it’s cheap. And by cheap, I mean ridiculously cheap. Just one liquid tube will set you back a dollar, if you go the Target route. Online, it can sell for as much as $4.00 per tube; overseas, the cost is double the price here in the United States.

As I mentioned before, this eyeliner is decent. E.L.F.’s official product page claims that “the smudge-proof liner is rich in color, creating a long lasting defined look.” They also note it contains a fine tip brush for easy and precise application.

Part of this is true. E.L.F’s black liquid eyeliner does come in a small tube with a fine tip brush, which easily glides over most skin surfaces. The application is dark. Application is extremely easy, as long as you’re not wired on Red Bull.

In my experience, however, this eyeliner is not necessarily long lasting, nor it is easy to get a defined look with this brush. While the brush tip is very fine, sometimes the color doesn’t always want to stick to the surface, forcing you to paint over the area several times to get the desired effect. It is also hard for me to define my eyes with this eyeliner, due to its skipping action. When it does go on smooth, the brush tends to make blunt, not thin, lines.

How E.L.F. Compares to Other Cheap Eyeliners

Though its skipping action can be downright irritating, this eyeliner is still eons ahead of other comparatively priced black liquid eyeliners. You can’t even find liquid eyeliners in stores for this cheap; the cheapest liquid eyeliner I found was around $5.00, and it was definitely worse than this product.

My thoughts? An ice cream cone at McDonald’s costs more than this liquid eyeliner. Skip the ice cream cone, get your E.L.F. black liquid eyeliner instead if you’re strapped for cash.
