Quick-Hit Reaction: 2011 Emmy Awards

COMMENTARY | The 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were held in Los Angeles Sunday. After watching the 2011 Emmy Awards on Fox, here are three things I found notable and interesting about the event.

One thing that really struck me about the ceremony was the beautiful dress Gwyneth Paltrow was wearing. Paltrow was in a black-sequin sheer dress designed by Emilio Pucci and it was just to die for, although it was very see through. I thought this was one of the best dresses of the night, even with the cut outs showing her stomach.

The reason why this struck me was I never really thought of her as being very liberal in how she dresses; usually she stays fairly covered up. But this year she just went all out with her sheer beauty. It did not leave much to the imagination but I think she should get praised for going bold and trying something more revealing because she has a great body and should show it off.

I was a little disgusted, however, when Lonely Island came out to sing “I Just Had Sex” with Akon and Michael Bolton dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow. For one I had never heard this song before with Akon, so I was a little taken aback by the song itself although I thought it was a pretty hilarious performance. The song was butchered from the original, which is probably because this is a primetime television show and children are around.

This kind of struck me as inappropriate, though, because the Emmy Awards are supposed to be family-friendly and “I Just Had Sex” is not exactly a song I would want my child listening to. I do not like Akon or rap but I do like Lonely Island and have heard numerous songs they have done with Justin Timberlake in the past, so I can appreciate their humor.

I was also struck by the fact that Peter Dinklage won Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role on “Game of Thrones” which is an incredible show. My boyfriend got me into this show when it first aired on HBO and I instantly fell in love with it, although I am not very into science fiction or fantasy genres of television as a rule. I always thought Dinklage was one of the main characters on the show that made it great and I am really happy he won because he deserved it. I am also happy that he won because “Game of Thrones” deserves to win awards for the creativity and awesome cast it has built around it.
