Psych Episode Review: Last Night Gus

Synopsis: Shawn, Gus, Lassiter and Woody attend a police officer’s retirement dinner and wake up the next morning in the Psych office hung over and with no idea what happened the night before. To make matters worse, a dead body turns up with three gunshot wounds and Lassiter’s gun has been fired and is missing three bullets.

What I liked about this episode: I loved the movie The Hangover and this episode obviously draws inspiration from that film. And, even though I had a few doubts at first, I had to love the mystery. The four men all somehow new the victim and he had Gus’ phone in his pocket. But, they need to unravel what happened the night before to find out whom the dead guy was and how he died.

The twist involving Shawn’s dad was a nice touch too; though nobody ever did explain what happened to his pants.

The ending was pretty interesting too because the killer isn’t someone obvious. Instead, it’s once again someone standing in the background with an assist from someone that doesn’t seem important at first. In other words, it’s a case only Shawn can solve.

What I didn’t like about this episode: As I said before, part of the thrill with this episode was the mystery about what they did the night before and I feel they might have let the cat out of the bag a little too early on some of the things. For example, I think it would have been great if they would have saved the part about Lassiter firing his gun until near the end; so we would be wondering if he actually shot someone.

I also feel that way about Shawn’s conversation with Jules. When I first heard he told her some sort of secret, I figured he confessed to her about not really being a psychic (which would be a really big bombshell). And, since I’m sure plenty of others felt the same way, I think it would have been great to have the episode leaving us hanging on that a little longer.

Final Opinion: Overall, this is a pretty funny and entertaining episode. I’m glad I recorded it on my DVR so I can watch it again.
