Product Review: Kinky Curly Knot Today

Many women with course hair understand the difficulties in detangling their hair. The harder time a woman may have combing through her hair, the more pain and breakage she may experience. Many products promise an easier time detangling but sometimes these products come up short or are loaded with many harmful chemicals. Many hair care forums on the web have posted about the Kinky Curly line which is marketed as organic hair care. I purchased the product to see how well it would work on my hair texture.

I purchased the product from my local Target. For an eight ounce bottle, I paid $11.99. This price was a little more than I was hoping to spend but because it claimed to be a natural product, I reluctantly made the purchase. Right away I was put somewhat at ease after noticing some of the main ingredients such as organic mango fruit extract, organic slippery elm, organic marshmallow root and organic lemon grass. The product seemed great because it was organic but I was curious to see how my hair reacted.

First and foremost, the smell is amazing. It smells sweet and tropical. The texture is similar to that of a glycerin based product; not too thick and not too thin. The Knot Today bottle says that it will smooth the cuticle and remove knots, snarles and tangles from thick curly hair so after shampooing I decided to test it out. After separating hair into sections, I applied the Knot Today to my hair. The product applied fairly easy and felt good on my hair but as a detangler I was not so impressed. Yes, the product did get the job done but not necessarily with the ease that is marketed by the product. Unless my hair was already partially combed through, the Knot Today provided no extra benefit when detangling. Much less expensive products, even though they are not organic, provide me with the slip that I need to detangle my hair with a breeze. Kinky Curly’s Knot Today, in my opinion does not provide the same results. Fortunately for me, the product doubles as a leave in conditioner. While I may prefer, non-natural products for detangling, I choose to go the natural route if a product is to be left in my hair. This product works well as a leave in conditioner. After shampooing, my hair is typically at its driest. Leaving in the Kinky Curly Knot Today restored the moisture and balance that was stripped from my hair after washing.

After using the product for a few weeks, I can say that it will be one of my staples. Applying this product to wet hair followed by a heavier moisturizer and last an oil is the method that has given me fantastic results. Would I recommend this product to aid in detangling for the pridce of $11.99? Probably not. As a leave-in conditioner however, the ingredients and the formulation make it a fantastic option for those seeking a more natural approach yet still effective approach to hair care. Please keep in mind that everyone’s hair responds differently to various products. Though this product did not work well as a detangler for me, it may work wonders for you. The only way to find out is to pick up the Knot Today and try it out. Good Luck!
