Popcorn Just Tastes Good Right Now

Let’ talk popcorn!

I love the stuff! Buttered, salted and freshly microwaved – it’s like the perfect snack anytime of the day or night. In fact, I like it so much I have no problem eating it the next day…a little stale.

I’m not big on kettle corn. That stuff is really popular at flea markets and festivals in the Midwest, but honestly I think it just stinks. The flavors are just wrong for me – and that’s coming from someone who likes Cracker Jacks.

Watching people eat popcorn is another great pastime. Some people load one piece at a time. Others gorge themselves with as many pieces as their mouth will hold almost as if they don’t get it now someone is going to take it away from them. It’s funny, because both types of eaters will invariably still drop kernels on the ground – no matter how careful they are not to do so. Think about it: have you ever enjoyed a bowl of popcorn and not dropped one or more pieces on the floor?

We hosted an exchange student from Brazil and he liked to take Hershey’s Chocolate Kisses and drop them in a fresh bowl of popcorn. The combination of salt and milk chocolate was an intriguing flavor assault on my taste buds. It’s not something I’d try often, but it’s worth experiencing once or twice.

I have a friend that likes to mix salt and cinnamon to sprinkle over their popcorn. I’m sorry, but that’s just plain disgusting. I’ve yet to be able to bring myself to even sample a single kernel.

There isn’t the perfect companion drink to go with popcorn though. Beer just doesn’t work well with it. Pepsi is ideal and iced tea isn’t bad either. Water…well, who drinks water with their popcorn? That’s almost like un-American.

And, just so we’re all clear on it: Orville Redenbacher is king of the popcorn business! I’ve finished my bowl of popcorn now…you go pop one.
