Peanut Butter Versus Almond Butter: Which is Better?

Everybody knows about peanut butter, I mean, it’s an American classic! But what’s this- almond butter?! Who is this food, who dares to make a mockery of the good ol peanut butter classic? Learn all about peanut butter compared to almond butter, and who really wins out, especially when it comes to health. To compare the two is almost sinful, but we want to know- which is better?

To be fair, I am a peanut butter gal, the crunchier the better. But I tell ya, I like the almost milky taste of creamy almond butter. When it comes to taste, it’s hard to choose a favorite- they both satisfy that lip-smacking, make-your-dog-do-weird-faces, jelly’s best friend type of thing you expect them to. So let’s just go to nutrition. If eating healthy was your kick, which would give you better health benefits, peanut butter or almond butter?

Calories are the same per serving, which is 2 tablespoons. Unsalted peanut butter and unsalted almond butter both yield 190 calories per serving. Hmm… both have 16 grams of fat per serving. Ahh, but peanut butter has 2 grams of saturated (bad!) fat, whereas almond butter only has 1.5 grams. If you’re watching your carbs, then almond butter is in your favor as well. Almond butter has 6 carbs per serving, whereas peanut butter has 7.

Almond butter takes the fiber cake too. Peanut butter has 3 grams of fiber per serving, where almond butter has 4 grams. But peanut butter has 8 grams of protein to almond butter’s 7. So far, though, almond butter appears to be winning the health race. Whoa- what’s this?! Almond butter has 8% daily calcium, where peanut butter only has 1%! Now, this is an almond butter breakthrough, but wait, there’s more! Almond butter also is loaded with Vitamin E- 40% of your daily needs’ worth, compared to peanut butter at 14%.

When it comes to iron, again almond butter is the clear winner, with 6% compared to peanut butter’s 3%. But each of these creamy goody wonders contain the same amount of folate, at 6% each. So, I would have to say that almond butter takes the cake overall, with the most amount of Vitamin E I have ever heard of in a food product (magic youth food in a bottle? Vitamin E works wonders for the skin…). One place almond butter sucks, though? The price- it’s easily twice as much as peanut butter. But hey, at Winco you can make your own, for comparable costs. And it is good.
