Paramore: The Best Songs Off of “Brand New Eyes.”

Paramore is a new rock radio station staple and most of their songs make me feel like stapling things to my skin with the itch inducing monotony. However, until “Brand New Eyes” I had never ventured into a full Paramore album and I am glad I did because I found a song I liked. My song by song notes are to be found below, but the best songs on the Paramore album “Brand New Eyes” are: ” All I Wanted,” “Careful,” and “The Only Exception.”

“Careful”: A run-along monotone that hits the jackpot with some haunting qualities to the tone in certain places, saving the song, and actually making it quite good.

“Ignorance”: The snarl of attitude feels false, even though the opening of the song seemed like it might rock out in the opposite direction. This ends up being the clown circle at the carnival show and too much of the silly and not enough of the axe murder.

“Playing God”: A simple success though slightly dull and when the guy chimes in near the end with the “I’ll point you to the mirror,” it becomes more obnoxious.

“Brick By Boring Brick”: A failure in fairy tale and in rocking, this one is too bop-bop boring like its name says.

“Turn It Off”: Any strength to be found in the lyrics is weakened by the monotonous vocal delivery. Nothing endearing about this song, early morning fog-grog for the brain feel to it for me, not enough sleep and somebody has switched the station to country music blah and I hate breakfast foods and just have some darn dry pastry to eat.

“The Only Exception”: A light twang of Avril Lavigne acoustic, which is an okay thing. I guess this chick would be cute on the street corner wit this song, throw down the dollar bill, but it’s not a heart winner for me. I think it’s the repeated emotion of the chorus that sells me out of it, I like the sentiment, but would almost prefer something more dramatic. Yes, that is nit-picking, I’ll cop to it, decent enough song.

“Feeling Sorry”: Just another Paramore track and nothing more, no wow, no perk up and listen quality.

“Looking Up”: This isn’t the last song? I mean the song that came before? I could have nodded off, woken up, and thought I was still on the “Feeling Sorry” song. Snore-fest, mainstage.

“Where The Lines Overlap”: Nothing new to see here, keep listening, keep getting beat with the stick.

“Misguided Ghosts”: It feels like it should be sad and pretty, but it manages to not capitalize on either leaning and just stays stiff. The nice little beat in the back teased me into thinking it would be more than what it was with some sort of climax, but to no avail; dry.

“All I Wanted”: This one does it for me. It takes you into that moment of emotion where you already linger or did not realize you wanted to go, takes you deeper in touch or gets you there. Lyrically sound to a sad pop rock melody and she plays with her vocals, lets them carry out further than the monotonous range she plays safe in for most of the album. Her voice stretches well and you can flick on your lighter and feel the goosebumps on your flesh. Best song on the album, I’d download the single.
