COMMENTARY | One Million Moms (OMM), the conservative, Christian, right-wing band of far-out watchdoggery has just gone after JC Penney for hiring beloved television talk show hostess Ellen DeGeneres as a spokesperson, according to Reuters. This preposterous move is yet another example of religious stupidity carried to a ridiculous extreme. Taking a look at the OMM web site shows pages of their unholy crusades to shovel their bigoted, “we’re right and you’re wrong” attitude down everyone else’s throats. Here are some examples:
Hating Gay People
They want JC Penney to fire Ellen DeGeneres. Why? Because she’s gay, of course. How dare JC Penney hire one of the kindest public figures in television?
Hating Planned Parenthood
OMM has a campaign going to get people to send notes to the Komen Foundation urging them to continue shafting poor women out of cancer screenings in order to promote an anti-choice agenda.
Still Hating Gay People
OMM has its panties in a twist over a wedding cake topper that has two men instead of a man and a woman. Why? Maybe they think the two men will come to life, visit their homes, and make them get divorced, cause, you know, gay people want to destroy marriage. Or maybe OMM members are just cracked.
Hating TV Comedy
OMM flipped its wig over the Modern Family episode where the baby bleeps the word “fudge.” I’m sure none of the OMM members’ kids ever uttered an inappropriate word and that moms can’t find any humor in a situation they can relate to.
Hating the Kardashians
Ok, maybe OMM has a point there, but they are railing against a Kardashian Barbie doll. They’re not railing against all the horrible stereotypes and self-esteem-destroying messages of the Barbie Doll, just the idea of one that looks like a Kardashian. What do they think – that the regular Barbie is good for young women’s self-image?
Hating Mariah Carey
OMM thinks Mariah’s Jenny Craig weight loss ad is too racy so they freaked out and campaigned to have it removed from The Family Channel. Apparently they don’t care if she is sexy as long as she does it someplace else. Maybe the OMM women are jealous of how hot Mariah looks.
Hating Transgendered People
OMM protested against Macy’s firing of a woman who would not obey the company policy of respecting transgendered people. Remember, kiddies, “different” is bad and sends you to heck. Or something like that.
Hating Holiday Retail
Family Dollar Stores kept shops open on Christmas. Oh No! Light the torches and sharpen the pitchforks. I notice nothing in their campaign screaming that Jews should not have to work during Hanukkah, or any other religion being respected.
Those are just the first few examples. OMM has pages and pages of this tripe. Maybe OMM needs a dose of its own medicine and should be the target of an organized e-mail campaign begging them to crawl back under their rocks and take their uncharitable venom with them.
