New Beginnings

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.” – Lao Tzu

Every day is a new beginning. All of life provides opportunities for new beginnings. Whatever has gone wrong, or right, in your life, you can begin again.

The Bible speaks of new beginnings and tells us to “forget the past and look forward to what lies ahead” (Philippians 3:13-14).

Changing yourself is a far more crucial new beginning than replacing the people in your life, or attempting the impossible task of changing the natures of those who remain in your life.

In terms of your career, a new beginning could simply mean a new approach, a new attitude toward your job or a new set of goals. A new beginning could also mean getting a different job or changing your whole career path; becoming a special education teacher rather than looking for your next job as a chief executive officer. If you have always looked at your job from the point of view of striving for the next promotion or raise, perhaps a new beginning could be looking at your job from the point of view of enjoying your interactions and getting to know your employees, colleagues, and customers better.

While a new beginning in a relationship could mean a new person in your life, it could be a new way of looking at an existing relationship. According to relationship coach Jonathan Lockwood Huie, changing your expectations is a bigger new beginning. Huie notes, “You are the element that is common to all your relationships, so if you have a pattern of failed relationships, consider examining your expectations for relationship, not settling for less, but seeking a fully engaged, yet self-confident and self-directed partner, rather than seeking perceived security, wealth, services (chores), and domination or submission.”

What about a new beginning with your family? Although you cannot choose new blood relatives, you can have a new beginning with your family by changing your attitude and becoming less critical of what they say and do. View everything your family says as merely their opinion because that is exactly what it is, nothing more and nothing less.

New beginnings are not easy. Disappointments come and go but life still moves on. So, no matter what problem you are facing, you can always start afresh, with God guiding you through.
