My College Application Horror Story

It was the beginning of senior year. Everything is lah-de-dah right? Wrong. My mother had been freaking out all summer about what I was going to do with my life, and the quickest thing coming up in that path, college.

I live in Florida, so I have several schools I could easily get into. I ended up applying to several of the state ones. FSU, UF, UCF, ect. It was the most boring thing I’ve done in my life, and of course all of them required essays. I had already finished all my English classes for high school, and I felt like all 4 were being thrown at me all at once with those essays! I managed to get them done, many late nights and cups of Monster later.

Well, if you live in Florida, you absolutely know that UF and FSU are rival schools. And if you don’t, well think of Yankees versus Red Socks and that should give you a good idea. I applied to both of them. Surprisingly, they had the same essay. I changed up a little bit from each one, if I spoke of the school name in my UF one, I changed it to FSU for that application. I thought it was a little too lucky.

I didn’t send them in at different times, I sent all of my applications in on the same day, even though the requirement dates were different, I was still behind the time line for all of them. I waited the necessary amount of time to find out where I got in. I got accepted to several schools, but the ones I really, really wanted to know about were UF and FSU.

About two months after I sent them in, I got a letter from UF. Scariest moment of my young life then. The envelope seemed quite thick, which usually was a good thing. I opened it, and began reading it. I had been rejected. And then I pulled out the next page. My essay was on it, with a big sad face on it! I started reading it, when I realized, I sent in my FSU one to them! I was humiliated! And of course, being rival schools, they didn’t appreciate that slip up one bit. A few days later my FSU one came in as well. Rejection as well, but minus the frowny face.

Moral of the story? Make sure you not only proof read your writing, but put them in separate areas so when you send your applications in, its the right one!
