More Grace and Less Gay

With the advent of legislation regarding gay marriage many Christians are scrambling to defend Marriage ideals. Politicians with conservative supporters have also jumped on the bandwagon to defend Christian Marriage as well. As a Christian I support a Biblical worldview on marriage as well but I fear that many Christians and politicians have gotten off track from the true Biblical message and have veered off into a sin-conscious political stalemate.

The recent public interaction between Michele Bachmann and an 8 year old boy have inspired many thoughts on this matter, not only from me, but also from others. How does one advocate for what one views as right while regarding everyone with love as Christians are commanded by Christ to do?

Christians seem to quickly forget that it’s not really a matter of right or wrong. The world doesn’t adhere to Biblical standards and everyone is equipped with the gift of free will. Everyone is free to choose what path they wish to follow. Is it proper that we should attempt to legislate morality for those who don’t follow Christ or Biblical standards?

I believe we’ve missed the mark entirely. We are so focused on sin that we forget about the Grace afforded us for our own sins. If we were to take stock of our daily indiscretions none of us would ever be able to measure up to the example Christ set for us. If we were able to then the crux of the Christian faith, Christ’s atonement for our sins would be unnecessary.

Knowing all this, why aren’t we sharing the Gospel of Grace with those who do not believe? Why are we focusing on what’s wrong with others and the world around us instead of Christ? Those of us who believe in the message of the Cross should be rallying to show His love to others instead of browbeating them with the Ten Commandments. After all, we’ve all broken our share of rules.

If we as Christians focus more on Christ and His message of Grace extended to all and allow the Holy Spirit room to convict and urge others in the right direction then I believe we will see so many more drawn into the flock. As Christians we realize that it is not our words or actions that affect change in others but God speaking through His Holy Spirit into the hearts of those He draws to him. We can’t save people who are gay because we can’t even save ourselves.

I know it’s easier to think of the right answers after the fact but I do hope someone provides an answer to that 8 year old boy who approached Michele Bachmann. Everyone needs fixing because all of us are broken. Being gay didn’t break his mother being born with a condition called sin did. God loves that 8 year old boy and God loves his mommy too. This is why He sent Jesus to the cross to pay for everyone’s sin and to make it possible for everyone to have an abundant life.

Let’s have less focus on being gay and more focus on God’s Grace. After all, we’ve all been sent to share the Gospel, not to browbeat non-Christians into submission.
