Memory Loss and the Elderly

Whether it’s medication, strokes or Alzheimer’s, most of us will have to deal with memory loss as we get older. It’s a scary thought, but there are ways to help. The following are tips I’ve learned both from family members and in my studies as a Master Herbalist.

Schedule: Having and following a schedule is extremely important. This gives some security to the person having the memory difficulties. Altering the schedule can cause a great deal of anxiety, so try to keep to it as much as possible.

Small, Safe Tasks: It may not be wise to hand a butcher knife to someone with memory problems, but having tasks to helps in a couple of ways. First, it allows the person to feel that he or she is contributing to the household. This improves self esteem. It also causes them to think about what they are doing. Folding laundry, as an example, may be something safe and simple.

Talking: This is one of the best and most frustrating things you can do. Getting the person to talk helps them remember more. It may be about things that happened fifty years ago, but those memories will be easier than what happened yesterday. The frustrating part is repetition. You will likely be asked or told the same things over and over again.

Puzzles: Crossword puzzles, word search, even jigsaw puzzles may be useful. Some studies indicate that word puzzles especially help. They may delay onset of some sorts of age related memory problems.

Crafts and other Activities: There is some evidence that learning or performing a craft can help keep the brain alert and stimulate the brain. Naturally, the craft will have to fit the abilities of the person performing them.

Patience: Whether you’re dealing with memory loss or caring for someone who is, you will need a lot of patience. It’s difficult to be asked the same question over and over and treat it like it’s the first time each time. However, to the person asking, it is the first time. Being unable to do or remember the things you ounce could is also frustrating. Patience is the key.

Memory troubles can increase as we get older, but there are things you can do. Talk to your doctor in order to choose the best avenue to help you maintain your ability to remember. Starting treatment as soon as possible will help you retain as much memory as possible.
