LOCAL PROM TRADITIONS

Whatever happened to the day when your date would pick you up for the prom in his dad’s station wagon ?

Well I know that time marches on and with time comes some change but the issue of prom transportation has taken a rare and interesting turn at one local high school .

I thought it was a little over the top when the center of attention at my grandson’s high school prom was who came in the biggest or strangest Limo. He graduated from North Harrison High in New Salisbury Indiana, this is about (50) miles from where I, ( and my sons ), went to school in Crothersville Indiana. We still have lots of family and friends there so this last spring(2007) my grandson Dominick was invited to attend their prom as well as his own. Wow, were we in for a surprise.

Dominick and one of his best friends, (Tyler), came to town for the prom. They double dated, Dominick took Katelyn and Tyler took Kayse. We all thought it was nice that one of the mothers had arranged for a horse drawn carriage for the two couples but we were soon to realize that this ride however odd and beautiful , was absolutely nothing.

It seems that the kids in Crothersville Indiana, this small town of only 2500 citizens had big ideas. I guess this had been going on for years on a small level but these small town kids have established a wild and different prom tradition and I think it is going places, literally.

If you are going to the prom at Crothersville High School this year, forget about trying to have the prettiest prom dress , or the best looking date, because those things, although important, will not get you noticed. No, because there is a new standard at this small town high school, something unique and intriguing.

It is your ride!

Yes, it is all about the ride, but don’t take this the wrong way. It is not about the biggest or best Limo. It is about helicopters and John Deere tractors, 1946 Fords and Chevys. It is about a pimped out pick up truck , bicycle, motorcycle or moped.

I happened to be watching all this with family and friends and we laughed till we cried. This was one of the best times anyone has had in this town for a while. It was so good to witness this display of sharp minds and good kids in a town that has been trying to fail for years. Those kids sent a message of hope to all who enjoyed their parade of rides. This is something none of us will ever forget. It left a warm place in our hearts that remains today.

My grandson Dominick graduated in 2007 and is now in the Navy, so you would think that this grandmother would not be there this year, but think again. I wouldn’t miss this for the world.

PLUS, I have information from a very reliable source that this year will be even better, (if that is possible), there are rumors of a couple that will arrive in a bass boat.

By the way don’t call me on prom night because I won’t be at home. I have a standing date to watch the kids arrive at prom in Crothersville.
