Likelihood of Our Favorite Film Couples Remaining Together After the Movie Ends

There have been countless romances throughout the history of cinema but which relationships have the best and worst odds of success after the movie ends? Epic film couples are analyzed to find which can realistically live happily ever after.

-Stay Together scale is out of five stars-

Beauty and the Beast

Couple: The Beast & Belle

Stay Together: ****

The Beast imprisons Belle’s father, yells at her constantly, and physically threatens her if she comes near his rose. Yet they fall in love. She has seen the heights of his monstrosities and still she remained. Eventually she sees the heights of his caring and their love is forged. (Spoiler alert) By the end of the movie the Beast reverts back to a handsome prince, but a prince whom she fully knew and loved even when he was beastly looking. It’s a relationship built on character, not superficialities, and therefore it has a high chance of success. The only hitch to this couple is that Bell may have come down with Stockholm syndrome, but if she didn’t, it will be a timeless romance.

Titanic

Couple: Jack Dawson & Rose DeWitt Bukater

Stay Together: * *

(Spoiler alert) Yes, Jack dies in the end, but if he didn’t, could their relationship last? Not likely. Although the Titanic was a doom laden ship, it was still a cruise liner and all the passengers on board were technically on vacation. Relationships formed during vacations have the highest probability of failure than any other relationship. This is because we are different people when we are on vacation. We aren’t worried about work, we don’t have to clean up after ourselves, all our meals are prepared for us, etc. It brings out nothing but the better angels of our nature. So when two vacationers meet, they’re seeing only the happiest sides of each other. When the vacation ends, they get to see the other side, and it is only then that compatibility is truly tested. Jack and Rose’s relationship may last, but who knows whether they could tolerate each other had the boat docked. In all likelihood their relationship was as doomed as the ship they sailed.

The Graduate

Couple: Benjamin Braddok & Elaine Robinson

Stay Together: *

(Spoiler alert) Knowing that your significant other has slept with your mother isn’t something you easily forget. Elaine eventually forgives Ben for this unsavory act, but it’s unlikely she’ll ever completely get over it. It will remain in the back of her brain and forever cause a strain on their relationship. Ben also displays great tenacity in winning Elaine’s affection, but as the final shot of the film shows us, where do they go from there? It is likely their relationship has already peaked and will only decline after that point. They still need to spend time getting to know each other, the Robinson family detests Ben, and they haven’t yet entered the real world where most relationships are hardened or dissolved. In all likelihood Ben and Elaine’s affections won’t graduate into a long lasting relationship.

When Harry Met Sally

Couple: Harry Burns & Sally Albright

Stay Together: *****

Can men and women actually be friends without sexual desire eventually getting in the way? Not really (At least according to this film). Over the span of years, Harry and Sally form a strong friendship with the understanding they will never become intimate. Without the pressure of sex their friendship blossoms into one of straightforwardness and honesty since neither is trying to impress the other. (Spoiler alert) When they finally do cave in to their inner desires, becoming a romantically linked couple, it is a union that is far likely to succeed well after the movie ends. The reason for this is simple; theirs is a relationship without any surprises. They both knew each other’s flaws and neurosis, backwards and forwards, inside and out, yet they still got together. With the hardest part of a relationship already conquered, there is an excellent chance of this couple remaining together.
