Lighted Jack-O-Lantern Candy Bowl

This year, when you’re carving your Halloween jack-o-lanterns, make one more. That way, when you have your party, or you just give out candies to your trick-or-treaters, you’ll have a delightful candy bowl filled with goodies. A pumpkin of any size is perfect for making a jack-o-lantern that glows plus gives out treats. Set it on the porch, and let trick-or-treaters help themselves, or set it on a table as a centerpiece for a Halloween party.

After washing and drying the outside of the chosen pumpkin, cut the top off, but cut it off so that you create a jagged edge, all the way around. Remove the lid and discard it. Scrape out the meat and seeds from inside the pumpkin. If you want, you can paint the pumpkin at this point.

If you want the jack-o-lantern to be lighted, print out a word from the computer, like “CANDY” or “TREATS”. Tape the pattern to the pumpkin and draw the letters onto it. Carve the pumpkin so that you cut out the lettering only. Set a battery-operated candle in the bottom to make the word glow on the candy dish. If you prefer, you can cut a face on the pumpkin rather than spelling out a word.

Use a glass or metal bowl and set it right in the opening of the pumpkin. The bowl should sink down into the pumpkin without falling all the way down into the bottom. Line the bowl with Halloween-theme paper and fill with candy.

If you don’t necessarily want the jack-o-lantern candy dish to glow, you can do something a little different. Just write the word across the pumpkin with a marker or use a stencil to make the chosen word. If you want, outline the letters with a marker, then scrape away the letters only to make them stand out more.

If you’re not making the lighted version of the jack-o-lantern candy dish you don’t need the bowl at the top of the pumpkin. Instead, just tuck Halloween-theme tissue paper or cellophane into the jack-o-lantern so that it sticks out of the top a little. This type of jack-o-lantern treat dish holds a lot more candy than the lighted version.

The unusual but noticeable candy dish is perfect as a decorator piece in your own home during the holidays, can be set outside for trick-or-treaters, or can be a display piece at a Halloween party. Whether you’re a skilled pumpkin carver, or a person without any talent in that department, you’ll find this project fun and easy to do.
