Leveling the Playing Field with Evolution

Every other month, an article hits the stand about creationism or intelligent design (not the same as the former) being taught in pubic schools. The response is never good. Proponents of creationism and intelligent deign are cast out as religious fanatics that attempt to subvert the “separation of church and state” clause in the law. This article will not entertain that argument as it is a hindrance to thoughtful dialogue.

Proponents of either view will hold hard to what they believe. If each group can get beyond it’s views that would be respectfully called exclusive; can both equally present their argument without being castigated? The unfortunate reality is that evolution has the upper-hand in its position in the education system. If the theory of evolution is so strong and supportable, could it not survive on its own if other views were present. The same question must be posed to creationism and intelligent design. If the view presented is thought to be a superior though; then it should be able to withstand scrutiny, not insipid hatred.

What does either party have to lose if all three were taught as electives and not the standard? Here is where the war will begin. Dethroning evolution, creationism or intelligent design awill generate an inconsolable outcry. However, what is the alternative? Make evolution the standard and the others elective? Or make on of its opponents the standard and evolution the elective?

To be fair to each view, the option should be placed on the table for each student to purse.

Consider the fact that progress is made when there is healthy discussion. Arguments only lead to hurt feelings and polarize. And here is the final stoke to the fire: No matter what the consensus comes to as the accepted and most agreed upon view; all three (and what other views are presented) will always be presented as the elective and not the standard.

Is this possible?
