Lace Painting

Have you ever really examined the motifs on various types of lace? Aren’t they gorgeous? There is material in some places, open holes in other areas, and the entire look is beautiful. The motif can be one of flowers, geometric shapes, or other designs. Have you ever painted with lace? It’s fun and easy to do and leaves anything you paint with a stunning, lacy appearance that’s unique and unusual.

The list of things you can paint with lace is very long. A few things you can paint include candles, mirrors, picture frames, table top or door perimeters, lamps and shades, display plates, or even across the glove box of your car.

Choose the lace you want to use and the object you want to change. Tape the lace in place on the object so that the entire area that you want painted is covered in lace. Make sure the lace is taped down well.

Choose a paint which is appropriate for the object you’re painting. For candles, mirrors, and similar things you can use a paint marker from a craft store or even spray paint. If you’re using a paint marker just color in all the open places on the lace. Paint markers work especially well if you’re transferring a lace motif to thin paper or other delicate surfaces. If you’re painting something that won’t allow the lace to be taped down – like paper – just cut the lace too large and weight down the edges.

Another way to paint objects with lace is to use an old fashioned paintbrush – bristled or foam. Just swipe the paint across the lace and remove the lace before the paint has dried. Use gloves and carefully pull the lace away from the object.

You can create various looks by how you do the lace painting. For example, you’ll create one look if you cover an object completely with the lace motif but a different look if you make just a border or other lace design on a portion of the object.

Some lace has motifs with large openings all over and other lace designs are more tightly woven. Consider this when choosing the lace you want to use. Lace with large, open designs will take more paint and more effort. No matter what object you use to lace paint, or what type of lace you choose, the finished product will be unique and stunning.
