It Gets Dark Too Quickly

No matter how bad the day at work
they are waiting for me
exsisting only for me
tails waving like banners
anxious barks.

I open the door and drop to my knee
let them lick my face
nuzzle against my arm
push their muzzles against my arm
“Wanna go outside?”

And here we are in the yard
the trees have changed to orange, yellows, and reds
they frolick and run
chase and bark
look back over their shoulder’s asking me to engage in their game
I find a tennis ball laying in the grass
toss it high as the brown dog leaps to catch it
his companion smiles a doggy smile
I lay down in the cold grass
still green though its stages of dying
and they lay half on me, beside me
warm fur pressed against the palms of my hand.

It gets dark too quickly
so we go inside and eat dinner
and I put on a movie and stretch across the carpeted floor
so they both have access to me
a dog head lays across my lap, another pressed into my elbow
they snooze as I watch tv
until I am too tired and take my own bed.
