Installing a Chain Lock on a Door

Having moved into a house back in September of 2010 that had no solid lock on its back door, I had to come up with a way to secure the door so that it wouldn’t be usable by criminals trying to break into my home. The quickest and easiest type of lock that I could find that would secure the door was a security chain lock. The security chain lock was simple to install and could be done in less than an hour. This was important for me as I needed to get this done as soon as possible because I had to go out of town for business the day after I moved into the house.

So with my idea for securing the door in mind, I headed off to the local Ace Hardware store. At Ace, I talked with their locksmith who recommended that I purchase a strong chain lock like what I was thinking of. It turned out to be a good thing that I chose to go to Ace and not a big box hardware shop because the locksmith was able to recommend a solid stainless steel chain lock that would not have been available at a place like Home Depot. The great thing about this lock too was that it only cost me about $8.00.

With my lock in hand, I headed home and got my Phillips-head screwdriver out of my toolbox. I then lined up the receiver section of the lock on the door and used my screwdriver to attach the receiver to the door. Then I placed the chain part of the lock on the doorpost and used my screwdriver to secure the chain to the doorpost. The entire repair took me a sum total of about an hour’s worth of time. I was glad to get this repaired because I only had a door knob lock on the door before and it could have easily been made to open by using a knife or credit card to collapse its bolt. Then there would have been nothing to prevent a burglar from entering my home.

In addition to the speediness of the repair that a chain lock offered for securing the door, I chose a chain lock for a variety of reasons. I chose it first of all for its strength. Next to a robust deadbolt lock, a stainless steel security chain lock is one of the best locks that you can put on your home’s doors. These locks also offer the opportunity for you to keep the door locked but to be able to look out and see who is at the door. This can be helpful in situations where you are expecting someone to visit, but don’t feel safe keeping the door unlocked. In the end, all of these advantages came together when I made my decision to install a chain lock on my home’s back door.

I would recommend to anyone needing a secure door in their home that they consider installing chain locks. I know that I have been well pleased with the security and flexibility that they provide. I believe that if you were to try a security chain lock on your door that you too would find that they are well suited for your home.
