Inexpensive Toys Your Cat Will Love

When I adopted my first cat, I spoiled him. I bought him every new toy I could find at the local chain pet store – electronic mice that move on their own, mice in plastic balls that squeak when rolled around, frilly stuffed mice, plastic balls with bells inside…I could go on and on. But none of these really got his attention. If they did, it wasn’t for long. Instead, it was the cheap toys or items in my house that I never intended to be toys that kept him entertained. So, for anyone thinking of adopting a cat or looking for new ideas for their current pet, here is the list of inexpensive toys that keep my cat entertained.1. Cat Dancer. This is one of those toys where you think, “Why didn’t I think of that?” It’s basically a piece of wire with rolled cardboard attached to it and it is my cat’s all time favorite toy. He’ll pick it up and bring it to me or meow at me until I pick it up to play with him, and it’s under three dollars. 2. Cork with a Tail. A local gentleman took all the corks from his wine bottles and glued short pieces of leather laces to them so they resemble mice. Then, he left them at the vet’s office for giveaway. My cat is addicted to batting them around the house. They’re very easy to make and you may already have the materials in your house. Just make sure you make at least a handful, because they have a tendency to get lost under furniture. 3. Peacock Feathers. Shortly after I got my cat, a friend moved into my house and brought his cat, who is a very different personality than my own. He doesn’t like to play as much my own cat does. He’s a bit aloof and doesn’t move too quickly (he’s much like his owner). Of course, I took it upon myself to find something that would light the spark of playfulness in him. It took some time, but I discovered feathers excited him. Well, he was super excited when we ended up with a large number of peacock feathers. He loves to jump, bat, and roll on his back attacking them. Our feathers were free from a friend. 4. Hair Ties. Occasionally, my cat likes to find small things that he can knock off my furniture, because he knows it gets my attention. I use unbreakable hair ties to put my hair up. One day I had one sitting on the table beside our couch. He knocked it off and my hairstyling went down from there. I can’t leave a hair tie out or he’ll take off with it. Ties are thin and light enough for him to carry around and they slide great on our laminate floors. A small pack of unbreakable ties costs under five dollars. 5. Laser Pointer. This is the mostly costly toy on my list. Depending on how fancy a laser pointer you want, they can cost from three to fifteen dollars. Both cats love to chase the laser. You just have to be sly not to let your cat know where the light comes from or they’ll get bored.

I learned my lesson. Cats don’t know if a toy is expensive or brand new, they just know that it’s easy to play with or moves like something they would naturally hunt. I have a whole basket of unused toys to show for it. So, save yourself some money and stick to inexpensive options that have proven to be entertaining.
