How to Make Stove-Top Potpourri

Strangely, one of my favorite things about the holidays is the smells. Favorite scents have such a way of embracing us in the warmth of treasured memories. This homey, welcoming scent of cinnamon and spices is the perfect foundation for your holiday parties and celebrations.

You can make your very own home fragrance on your stove top and it’s quick and easy! Each “batch” will last you several days.

Here’s everything you will need:

A small pot
An orange
3 or 4 cinnamon sticks
A dash of cloves
Water

Slice an orange into quarters and pour just enough water to cover the orange into the pot. Add a dash of cloves and several cinnamon sticks into the pot and let it simmer on low on your back burner. The combination of the citrus with the spices creates a very welcoming, Christmas-y smell that you and your guests will love!

Maintaining this potpourri is incredibly easy. All you have to do is check on it every few hours, and if needed add a little more water. If you would like to re-use it the next day, simply refrigerate overnight and then return to a simmer in the morning.

You can also experiment with other spices and even essential oils. You could also switch out the orange slices for apple to create a more autumn appropriate fragrance.

Here’s wishing you a very merry Christmas filled with friends, family and good smells!
