How to Get Hired – Your First Job Interview

Going on your first job interview can be a bit of daunting. A new job seeker can be unsure of what to wear and how to act during the interview process. In my time in human resources, I learned guidelines for what employers look for in prospective employees. I saw employees lacking experience be hired solely because of how the interviewee presented him or herself in the interview. The appearance and demeanor of the job applicant impressed the hiring manager. There are simple things that everyone can do in order to increase their chances of successfully getting hired.

It is vital that you appear at a job interview well groomed and wearing appropriate clothing. For an office job, that would mean wearing a professional outfit. Women should wear a pant suit or professional appearing skirt wile men should wear a button down shirt and tie for men. For more casual jobs, like wait-staff or fast food, a more casual look is appropriate. The clothing should still be clean, flattering and with no visible sayings or potentially offensive pictures. Jeans are ok for casual places if they are not too tight, have no rips or tears even if that is part of the style, and are not overly worn. Hair should be brushed or combed and styled in an appropriate manner for the job. Nails should be clean and trimmed appropriately. Makeup, if worn, should be tasteful and not heavily applied. Go light on any application of perfume or cologne. Finally, be sure to wear deodorant. This seems like a no-brainer but it was an issue more than once that cost individuals a job offer.

How you present yourself prior, during and after the interview is highly important. Always be on your best manners. Addressing individuals as Sir and Ma’m will often impress. Maintain eye contact while being asked and answering questions. Repeat back part of the question in your answer to show you were indeed paying full attention. Answer questions calmly and slowly. If it is a delicate question, feel free to pause for a moment and consider your answer.

Learn a little about the business, its history and practice prior to the interview. Go to the interview with three or four questions that you prepared prior to the interview. The interviewer will be impressed by well thought out questions. Think about your desires for shift, wages and hours per week. Make sure your expectations are realistic for the job you are applying for. Be prepared to negotiate.

Most people are nervous for interviews. That is fine and interviewers usually expect that. Try deep breathing before you go into the interview. It will help relax your entire body and focus the mind. With a pleasant smile, positive demeanor and a good appearance, you will have a leg up in attaining the job you desire.
