How I’m Planning a Family Vacation for Mardi Gras Break

Planning a family vacation does not have to be hard or stressful. As a travel agent, I am always on the look out for budget-friendly vacation spots for families. Right now I am looking for something for my family, though. Since I live in South Louisiana, I get a week-long break from school during Mardi Gras. As the rest of the world heads down this way for fun, we are looking for somewhere to run away to for rest, relaxation and a little fun. OK, a lot of fun!

Money Matters
People always ask us how we can afford to take vacations, so let me offer a few tips on saving money on vacation and on ways to pay for that vacation. First, I really recommend finding a travel agent that you can trust. There are several agents who are looking to charge you as much as possible so their commission is higher. But, there are even more who would rather work on saving you money so that you come back and refer your friends. Look around and find one with whom you are comfortable.

Next, try to plan ahead. If you can’t make up your mind like me just set aside money for your trip. This is the hardest thing for me to do. One way that makes it easier is to buy gift cards each time you get paid. Say you want to save $100/week for your trip but you know you’ll spend it if you have the cash. Every week, go to Wal-Mart and buy a $100 Visa gift card. When it’s vacation time, you can use these to pay for the trip and pay for meals or whatever you need. If you get a Green Dot card, you can add to it each time so you don’t have to carry multiple cards.

Booking Tips
This year, we have decided on a family ski trip. I have searched, booked, cancelled and searched more than I care to admit for this trip. But, I have learned that there are budget-friendly ski resorts out there.
If you are not using an agent, check vrbo.com for good prices on condos. If that scares you, know that they offer insurance so you don’t have to worry if the owner turns out to be shady. I’ve stayed many times with people through VRBO and have never had a problem.
For airfare, check rates on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the best fares. Check several sites because they are all different. I have found that Travelocity and Priceline have the best rates on the most airlines. I always check Southwest as well, though.

Planning a family vacation can be half the fun or a whole lot of headache. Here’s hoping you loads of fun!
