Highlights of Reykjavik, Iceland’s International Film Festival

Reyjkavik, Iceland is truly a unique city, often called the “the nightlife capital of the north.” Although the city does host an impressive array of night time activities, it’s certainly more than just pubs and clubs for the young. The Icelandic city hosts many events throughout the year including Culture Night that takes place during August but Reykjavik’s International Film Festival is truly an annual fall event not to be missed and is absolutely worth a trip to the home of the Northern Lights.

The international film fest is the city’s largest film event and has become increasingly popular as one of Europe’s largest film events hosting more than 25,000 visitors from across the world. This year’s event takes place from Sept. 22- Oct. 2nd and if you’re not able to dash to this year’s event, there’s no reason to not plan for next year’s extravaganza. Here’s a list of reasons Reykjavik’s International Film Fest should be your next travel destination.

The locals and landscape

The city’s locals are incredibly welcoming and friendly to their visitors. If you need directions, help with where to get your next bite of food, or insight on the best hidden spots where the locals go they will easily get you on your way. If you’re not taken aback by the general warmness of the town’s people you will be by the landscape. Reykjavik is an impressively beautiful city and even if you are only here for a few days for the film fest don’t miss out on stepping into a geothermal pool.

The Blue Lagoon spa is one of the most popular attractions of the city and visitors enjoy bathing and relaxing in the natural geothermal seawater, known for its positive effects on the skin. A visit to the spa is said to promote harmony between body, mind and spirit, and enables one to soak away the stresses of modern life. What’s not to love about that!?

If you’re a member of the press and get lucky enough to cover this great event or even if you happen to be business person, don’t hesitate to bring a few extra business cards. The after parties each night of the film festival allow you to meet other individuals from all over the world. Of course, if you’re traveling all the way to Reykjavik’s International Film Fest you must absolutely love film, right? The film fest shows some absolutely extraordinary films every year. In 2011 the film fest will be showing a variety of films on a variety of topics including culture, music, food, human rights, and more. This year includes the films, “Beats, Rhymes & Life: the Travels of a Tribe Called Quest” by Michael Rapaport, “Burma Soldier” by Nic Dunlop, Annie Sundberg, and Ricki Stern, “Red State” by US director Kevin Smith, and that’s only a few films out of several screenings. It’s one of the places to see some of the best obscure and interesting movies out there and a great place to get away from the Hollywood standard.
