Guide to the Virginia Coast

The coast of Virginia offers a variety of coastal communities and beaches. Each and every one of them caters to you and your family. You can choose from a remote quiet destination or a high energy, entertaining vacation. Whatever your idea of an ideal vacation is, Virginia’s coast is sure to offer it!

Virginia Beach

One of the most popular beach destinations in Virginia, is the city of Virginia Beach. The beaches are clean and properly maintained. From the middle of May until the middle of September, the beaches are patrolled by lifeguards. Most of the activity in the Virginia Beach area occurs around the boardwalk.

The boardwalk, which is not boards, but concrete, offers you 3 miles of biking, hiking, skating, shopping, eating and festivities. There is a large selection of restaurants for you to enjoy, that overlook the boardwalk and ocean. You can also rent bikes and skates for your enjoyment, during your stay in Virginia Beach.

There are plenty of accommodations located throughout the Virginia Beach area. You can choose from cottages, houses, camping, resorts, hotels, or condos. You also choose from a variety of locations. If you want oceanfront lodging or ocean view lodging, you can choose those, or if you want to be close to town or in town, you can also choose those locations.

Virginia’s Eastern Shore

Virginia’s Eastern Shore is home to 3 well known beaches, including Cape Charles Beach, Assateague, and Chincoteague. Cape Charles Beach is a great place to take small children. There are no waves and the water is shallow, so the kids will love it. The Cape Charles Beach has public beach access, as well as park benches and wooden walkways.

Assateague is free admission and offers you breathtaking beauty and unbelievable views. There are no restaurants or accommodations on Asseteague, so you will need to stay elsewhere, but it is worth the visit to try and catch a glimpse of the island’s wild ponies.

Chincoteague is connected to Assateague by a small causeway. There are no oceanfront accommodations here, but there are plenty of motels, hotels, vacation rentals, and bed and breakfasts. The quiet, laid back pace of Chincoteague attracts vacationers year after year.

Norfolk

Located just west of Virginia Beach, Norfolk has 8 miles of beach front, on the Chesapeake Bay. The surf is gentle and the summer brings in the lifeguards and visitors. You can rent kayaks, sailboats, paddle boats and jet skis so you can enjoy the bay.

In addition to these locations, the Virginia coast has, Hampton, which offers more than 11 marinas. You can visit them when the fisherman return and see the catch of the day. Virginia also has river beaches located on the Chesapeake Bay and on the Atlantic Ocean. These rivers are especially visited by fisherman. They can enjoy the fishing and catch both saltwater and freshwater fish all in one river.

The coast of Virginia is a huge attraction, especially in the summer months. You can find a beach to fit any taste, style or mood. Whatever you like, you can find it on the coast of Virginia.
