Green Living: Repurpose Old Sweaters into a Crocheted Headband

Repurpose old sweaters into wearable headbands. These easy to make headbands can be worn to accessorize your favorite outfit or as an ear warmer in the winter. The basic headband uses a single crochet stitch but any stitch will work as long as the band is the proper length. Make sure to use an I/9/5.5mm crochet hook to achieve the proper gauge. This provides enough elasticity in the headband so it does not bind when worn.

Material:

Old sweater or 2-ounces of 4-ply yarn (Roll yarn from old sweater into a ball)
Size I/9/5.5mm crochet hook
Scissors

Instructions:

Row 1 – Chain 53 stitches. Slipstitch the last stitch to the first stitch in the row making sure there are no twists in the chain.

Row 2 through 10 – Chain 1 stitch. Single crochet in each stitch around. Slipstitch the last stitch to the first stitch in the row. Finish off. (At this point, add more rows if you want a wider headband.)

Suggestions:

Change the single crochet stitch to a double crochet. Complete a total of 5 rows of double crochet to create the same width band. Change the appearance of the single crochet by crocheting in the back loop of each stitch rather than through both. A horizontal line will appear across the headband creating a more sophisticated look.

Tips: Add embellishments to the headband such as buttons, beads or lace. Attach a crocheted flower to the headband to add dimension. Crochet a simple flower by chaining 2 stitches. Complete 10 single crochet stitches in the second chain from the hook. Slipstitch the last stitch to the first stitch of the row. Chain 10 stitches. Single crochet in the next stitch. Repeat the chain 10 stitches and the connection process around the circle. A small daisy type flower is created. Attach the flower to the headband using a button in the center.
