Green Bay Packers Tie NFL Passing Record for Team Touchdown Passes

In the Green Bay Packers’ 45-41 victory over the Lions Sunday, the Packers managed to extend their victorious streak over the Lions to 21 years. The Packers also became the first ever NFC North team to sweep the division. Both of these milestones were widely reported, but what was commonly overlooked was the fact that Flynn’s massive game pushed the 2011 Green Bay Packers into the NFL record books in another highly prestigious category.

Total team TD passes for a season.

The original record of 51 had been set in 2004 by the Indianapolis Colts on the strength of Peyton Manning’s 49 TDs and Jim Sorgi’s 2. The 2004 achievement by the Colts was perhaps overshadowed by the fact that Manning had shattered Dan Marino’s Individual record for TDs in a season.

The Packers now join the Colts in the record books thanks to Aaron Rodgers’ 45 TDs throughout the first 15 games of the season, and Matt Flynn’s 6 in the season finale.

Achieving this record is probably a little bit off the radar since, as good as Matt Flynn has shown himself to be in previous starts, it would have been hard to predict that at the end of season it would be Matt Flynn who stands alone for virtually every single game Packer passing record.

Congratulations to the 2011 Green Bay Packers who now have to be entered into the conversation as the most prolific passing offensive of all time.
