Possibly there has been a star that you just really liked. Have there been heroes in your life? A few stars that stand out in my mind are listed in my article.
Diana Ross
I really enjoyed the movie Lady Sings the Blues. The interaction between Diana Ross and Billy D. Williams was electrifying. The character she portrayed show her struggles of being black in that period of time. It also showed her struggles as a singer. Many times the audience and others see the fame and the glory, but not what goes on behind the seen. The character “Billy Holiday” struggled with drug addiction. One of the songs that Diana Ross sang was “Endless Love.” That was one of my favorites. When I actually watched Diana Ross on the Oprah Show with her family, it was good to see how her children interacted so well with her. It was refreshing to see the great family interaction.
Luther Vandross
Luther, Luther, Luther. I loved to hear him sing his ballets. I once watched his autobiography on television and was amazed to see the number of times he was turned down for record deals, because “ballet’s were not popular at the time. I did not know that he was on Sesame Street as a teenager. The autobiography showed excerpts from the Sesame Street show. There was talk of his weight battle. He would loose it, then gain it back. Luther talked about not wanting to go on stage, because he felt he was letting his fans down because he had gained so much weight. Luther was a good-looking, handsome man too. His weight did not matter to me, but that voice was melody to my ears. One of my favorite songs he sang was “A House is not a Home.” He talks about it is not the same when there is no one there to hold. The lyrics also mention that he was not meant to live alone. This song really makes you think about life.
Tyler Perry Moore
This man is inspiring, in that he has revealed so much of himself. He shared that his life has not always been about fame. He spoke about how no one showed up for his first plays and he was discouraged, but he kept going. How many times have writers wanted to give up or actually gave up? I was glad that he shared he struggled from 1992-1998. He emphasized to never give up. He shared his struggles and his pains. The character Madea is a character that might just be in several families. In families where there has been a lot of drama you might see the Madea character that has no reserves about fighting physically for her rights. Tyler Perry Moore mentioned his remembrance of Oprah Winfrey saying that writing can be cathartic. Another thing that he spoke about on the OWN show was that his father would build houses for about $1,000 then the owner would sell them for $60,000. He emphasized that he did not understand that logic. Besides emphasizing never to give up, he emphasized that he always wanted his “own.” He believed in ownership. In fact, there are those today that are getting their own such as Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King, Steve Harvey, and many others.
He spoke about connecting with others. This is something that I believe most writers hope to achieve that connection with others. In fact, if we think about it, humans want to be connected. That is just part of our makeup. Who are you connected to?
