Getting Pregnant: How Long is Too Long?

OK- so every woman, every man, and every couple is different, so one couple may be able to get pregnant seemingly by just looking at one another, and another couple can take years to get pregnant. So, how long should trying to get pregnant really take? How long is too freaking long, and what then? I mean, not everyone has honeymoon babies, after all…

On average, a healthy couple who has consistent unprotected sex should get pregnant within a years’ time. Some couples can get pregnant on the first try, other couples can take a few months. But if a couple can’t seem to get pregnant within a year, then perhaps it’s time to see a fertility specialist. Keeping track of how long you have been trying to get pregnant can give you the red flag you need to see a doctor. If you have been trying for more than a year (of even less, if it concerns you), then see your doctor to find out what you may need to get pregnant.

One way to ensure getting pregnant is for the woman to maintain a healthy weight (obesity is a factor in being unable to get pregnant, as is being underweight) and not stress out so much (difficult for a frustrated female, but essential- stressed eggs are unhappy eggs). Also, she should keep watch of her cycle so she knows when she is ovulating. In reality, a woman can only get pregnant for a few days every single month, so unless she is having unprotected sex every single day, her chances of getting pregnant aren’t at super odds.

A man should get checked out too, to make sure his sperm count is at a great level. Sperm levels can be affected by lifestyle (a hot laptop can damage his boys and underwear too tight can take its toll), and age. As a man ages, his sperm count lowers. Both the man and the woman should relax a bit, and realize that some couples don’t get pregnant right away. The couple should also look to their families to see how long it took their siblings or parents to get pregnant- often, how quickly you can get pregnant is a genetic thing. Quitting smoking and drinking is a great thing, too- it’s healthy for both sperm and eggs.

Just remember- when trying to get pregnant it’s not a race already. If you get pregnant the first time you have unprotected sex, then that’s OK. If it takes you a whole year to get pregnant, then that’s OK too. Everyone is different. Try to relax, stay calm, and let nature take its course. And if you have been trying for a while and no baby bump yet, a fertility specialist can help.
