Free EFL/ESL Conversation Activity/Game: Fill in the Blanks

Over the years, I’ve discovered that EFL/ESL teachers have difficulty in getting their EFL/ESL students to speak in English. Because of that, I’d like to share a free EFL/ESL conversation activity/game that can be used as standalone material or together with and EFL/ESL coursebook. The name of the activity/game is “Fill in the Blanks”. It involves giving students a list of statements with missing words in the middle and asking to students to fill in the blanks.

Step 1: Think of a theme/topic beforehand. Write it on the board/flipchart.

Step 2: Divide students into subgroups of three to four. Give each subgroup a list of statements with missing words in the middle. For example, if the topic were “Men vs. Women”, two statements could be, “Women usually…..than men” or “I would…if I…” The statements should be thought of beforehand and enough photocopies should be made for the whole group. Five to ten statements should be enough.

Step 3: Have students express their answers with partners in their subgroups. Walk around the room and observe students’ answers. Make note of any mistakes made and/or improvements to be made.

Step 4: Bring subgroups together as a whole group and invite students to share their answers. Go over mistakes and improvements, illustrating on a flipchart if necessary.
