Flowering Plants that Grow Well in the Shade

There are lots of flowering plants that grow well in the shade. We tend to think flowering plants need plenty of sunlight but the list of flowering plants that grow well in the shade is a lot longer than you might think.

So what are the flowering plants that grow well in the shade that you can cultivate in your back garden?

As most flowering plants need between four and six hours sunlight a day, many gardeners plant ferns and other ornamental plants in the mistaken belief that they are the only plants that will grow in a shady spot. Nevertheless as we shall see below there are many flowering plants that grow well in the shade.

Among flowering plants that grow well in the shade are annuals, biennials and perennials. Flowering plants that grow well in the shade include the violet plant which is ideal as ground cover in shady areas. They are herbaceous and can be grown in either an annual or perennial variety and in colours that range through white, cream, yellow and blue.

Other flowering plants that grow well in the shade are the lisianthus, a white, yellow or purple plant with bell-shaped flowers that is a hardy annual and grows to about two feet in height, the hydrangea, whose distinctive large heads are seen in numerous colours including white, pink, blue and purple, the rhododendron plant, really a bushy shrub or small tree whose flowers appear in clusters of white, pink, red or purple, and the azalea which is actually a smaller version of the rhododendron. With its vivid colours, the azalea can be grown either as a plant or a hedge.

Hanging plants also include flowering plants that grow well in the shade. Typical examples of these are the fuchsia, best grown in a large hanging pot, the begonia plant, which can be found in white, pink, yellow or scarlet and can be grown indoors with very little effort, and impatiens, an annual variety that can be cultivated either in garden soil or a hanging basket and can reach around a foot in height.
