Feng Shui Elements: Decorating With Water

Water has a unique way of circulating energy inward and outward. This element’s design and use invites abundance, consciousness, self-awareness and serenity to your home or surroundings. Water energy offers release and renewal.

WATER CHARACTERISTICS

Similar to metal, water has two aspects. Moving water is considered Yang and indicates both movement and release. Still water is considered Yin and represents stillness, calming the flow of energy in a room.

WATER DESIGN

Still water (Yin) energy can be fostered by any still water arrangement – a goldfish bowl that doesn’t require a pump, floating flowers in a bowl or a vase of flowers, a birdbath in a garden or even a swimming pool. Features that bring energy down, such as a low ceiling or any hanging things, increase still water’s comforting energy. Moving water (Yang) energy is seen in items such as fountains or aquariums. Water energy may also encourage abundance. Thus, a statue of a frog going into the water will bring in the needed energy.

WATER COLORS

For still water energy, incorporate the color black into your décor. Water is most accurately symbolized by the womb, and black represents the darkness of the womb and the birth of consciousness. For the Yang aspect of water, deep shades of blue are preferred to encourage movement and abundance.

BALANCING WATER

Metal feeds water and subdues wood, Earth will subdue water, and water will encourage Wood. Try adding physically metal items to promote the energy of water. The grounding energy of Earth will drain water’s movement, so use those items sparsely and only as needed for balance.
