Easy Eyeliner Tips

I love eyeliner. It’s true. I think I look rather, well, naked, without it. It’s a great way to dray attention to your eyes, modify your eye shape, and have fun with your looks. But it can be a big challenge to apply if you’re not used to it or you’re prone to flinching. Here are some great tips for easily applying your eyeliner, even if you’ve never worn it before.

Practice. Try applying your eye liner when you’re not in a hurry and when you don’t have to go anywhere special. Take your time and try to make a smooth, thin line along the base of your lashes. The more you practice, the better you’ll get.

Open your mouth. We’ve all seen people make funny faces when putting on their eye makeup. But those funny faces actually serve a purpose. When you’re mouth is wide open, you’re much less likely to flinch, sneeze, or twitch. Your eye muscles relax when your mouth is open, allowing you to easily apply mascara and eyeliner.

Hold the eyelid taught. If you have trouble keeping your eye open when applying liner, or if you flinch easily, it will help you to pull your eyelid from the outer corner of your eye towards your ear. Be gentle, and don’t pull hard. You don’t want to cause too much friction which will eventually cause more wrinkles to form. When your lid is taught, you can easily draw your eyeliner on your lid.

Make small, short strokes. Small, short strokes are far more forgiving than a big long, fat line. Take it slow and just make a tiny line at a time.

Play connect the dots. The most important role of eyeliner is to darken your lash line, which helps your lashes look fuller at the base. Imagine you are playing a game of connect the dots – just darken the line from lash to lash and you’ll be a liner pro in no time.

Use eyeshadow. Dark eyeshadow makes a great version of eyeliner. Just dip a liner brush in a tiny bit of water, and then dip it into your eyeshadow. Make a small, thin, slow line along your eyelashes. Take your time and blend it in. You can layer eyeshadow right over top of traditional eye liner for a longer wearing, more dramatic look.

Avoid liquid eyeliner or cream eyeliner. Cream and liquid liner are the hardest to apply and the easiest to cause mistakes. Instead, stick to a creamy mechanical pencil for the most forgiving, easiest to use eyeliner.

The greatest thing about eyeliner is that it is easy to fix mistakes. If you mess up a little bit, dip a cotton swab in eye makeup remover and touch it up. If you mess up a lot, just wash it off and start over again. The more you practice, the better you get. And pretty soon, all eyes will be on yours.
