The Demons had magical power as such they continued to harass the saints and did not allow them to perform their prayer and meditation (tapasya). Their menace continued unabated and they planned to attack the Gods also. The Gods became very much worried and concerned over the increasing onslaughts of the Demons. The Gods– Brahma, Vishnu , Mahesh and Indra discussed the matter and decided to contribute the Powers of all the Gods and thereby to create a symbol of supereme power in the form of a beautiful lady called Durga. The King of Demons was very much charmed to see Durga in the form of a beutiful lady and expressed his desire to marry her whereupon Devi Durga sent the message to the Demon king that she would marry only such a person who had the capacity to defeat her in the battle.
