Tips to avoid a collision; You can reduce your chances of a collision by doing the following. Research your area. Know where most deer collisions happen. Choose roads away from deer populated areas. This means changing your route. Drive on roads with heavier traffic. Noise often keeps deer away. Avoid roads with brush close to the roads. Deer like to hang out in those places.
Use high beam lights in dark areas. Lights can save your life. If your route takes you through low valleys, fog can often cloud your view of the road. Low beam lights can let you see better. Remember deer or on the ground. You need to look under the fog.
Deer whistles are very inexpensive. They work similar to a silent dog whistle. I have used them and they seem to work for me and others. You can get them at in auto supply shop. They stick right on your bumper. Anyone can place them on their car. They just have to follow directions.
Pay attention to deer signs along the road and reduce your speed. The signs are there for a reason. Honk your horn, if you see one in the road. Sometimes the noise will make them leave.
Deer reaction; Always be prepared for the unexpected. Deer have run into the side of cars, jumped through windshields, run head on and even tried to jump over a moving automobile. Each case has a different reaction.
What to do if you hit a deer; Like any accident, stop and turn on your warning lights. Avoid any further accident hazards. If possible, pull out of the line of traffic. If the animal is still in the road, dial 911 for help. Some states require you to report to the DNR (Department of Natural Resources). Usually, this is just a simple phone call. Call your insurance company. Make sure you take pictures and have a copy of the accident report. Insurance companies like the facts.
