Cornwall Vacation

Cornwall is located in the west of Great Britain. It is a peninsula in the Atlantic Ocean and has almost 300 miles of beautiful coastlines and a diverse landscape that offers incredible views.

I was fortunate to have spent many summer vacations in England as a child. Cornwall and neighboring Devon are some of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. I remember being excited to drive along the top of the cliffs and hoping that we would get sprayed by the sea water hitting the rocks. Sometimes we would stop to just wait for the next splash.

Cliff top walks are a great way to take in the sea breezes and to enjoy spectacular views. However, walking through the interior countryside can be just as rewarding and at the end of the day you might want to have dinner in one of the fishing villages along the coastline to enjoy watching the tide go in and out.

A must-have is fish and chips when visiting England. Chips are British English for French fries. You may also want to try Cream Tea with Scones and Clotted Cream with strawberry jam on top.

Cornwall retains a distinct cultural identity reflecting its Celtic history surrounded by many legends. The Cornwall Council website states that the Historic, Buildings, Sites and Monuments Record holds more than “50,000 records of sites, structures, buildings, artifacts, finds and place-names throughout Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (including the marine environment)”. Medieval buildings, historic sites and finds from the Stone Age ranging all the way to the 20th century can be explored.

A great way to enjoy the views is to take a bus tour from St. Ives to Penzance. Taking about three hours it offers great opportunities to take in the landscape and scenery.

St. Ives is a favorite vacation spot for British and International tourists alike. The town is cradled around the harbor. Fresh fish caught daily can be enjoyed at the many local restaurants. There are cobbled streets for you to explore passing by fishermen’s cottages and small cafes along the way.

A favorite way to stay is to settle in to one of the many Bed and Breakfasts often run by one family. Of course, there are regular hotels and if you like it really different, you might stay in an old castle or monastery that was turned into a hotel.

Artists like painters and writers have been inspired by the beautiful surroundings in Cornwall, England and today, there is a flourishing art scene with many galleries.

Even Hollywood knows of the beauty of Cornwall and it has been a filming location in many movies like the 2010 Alice in Wonderland and in the 1993 version of The Three Musketeers. Steven Spielberg’s 2012 blockbuster Warhorse was filmed in Dartmoor National Park.

If you like beachcombing, sunbathing, hiking, biking, admiring ancient buildings and exploring historic sites, visiting aquariums or botanical gardens, then you can do all that on your next vacation in Cornwall, England.
