Constitution Day

On September 17, 1787 the founding fathers of the United States signed the Constitution. The Constitution is a document that guarantees certain inalienable rights to the citizens of America and is meant to serve as a protection to the people from government abuses of power. As citizens, we are wise to inspect this document and learn our rights as citizens. At the very least, know the Bill of Rights: they are YOUR rights. On Constitution Day this year, take some time to read the Constitution and Bill of Rights. We owe it to ourselves to learn our rights, in order that we may stand up for them.

The Constitution begins: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” Click here to read the full Constitution.

After some contemplation by the people, it was decided that some clauses and clarification were needed if the people were to remain free and retain their rights. Hence, the Bill of Rights: “The Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution.” Click here to read the full Bill of Rights.

In the midst of our remembrances in America, let us not forget this holiday that celebrates the one thing we all have in America, our rights. Know them, keep them, stand up for them, fight for them. The Constitution is your sword and shield. Happy Constitution Day.
