Cheap and Easy Bamboo Headboard

Don’t own a headboard? Have a headboard, but it’s simplistic and needs a make-over? No matter what your headboard dilemma you can have a whole new one in a short matter of time. Making a new headboard – especially a nice one – can be a complicated thing but, when it’s a bamboo headboard, you’ll find yourself finished in no time. When my son and I decided to make-over his headboard, we were so pleased with the results, and you will be, too.

If you have a solid wood headboard, one that has no embellishments, that’s a good headboard for the bamboo make-over. Bamboo place mats allow you an inexpensive and easy way to give the headboard a new look. Use one or more picture frames, and one or more bamboo place mats, to create the look you want. Remove the glass and backing of the picture frame and set them aside for another project. Use the existing cardboard of the frame to hold the bamboo mat. Just cut the bamboo place mat to be the size of the cardboard and glue it in place. Hang one or more of these framed, bamboo arrangements to give your headboard a whole new design.

You can achieve various looks from the above project by the way you use the mats. For example, hang two, three, or four frames, vertically, each with a bamboo mat, to create one effect. Or, purchase one long frame, use a bamboo rug instead of a mat, hang it horizontally, and you’ll have a completely different appearance.

If you have no headboard at all you can use a bamboo rug to make one. Or, try a rolled, bamboo window blind for the project. Use glue, double-sided tape, or even nails with tiny heads, to hang the bamboo rug on the wall, behind the bed. The rug should hang down at least to the bottom area of the mattress.

If you can use a single, bamboo rug, and it fits perfectly without cutting, you won’t need a frame for the new headboard. But, if you have to cut the rug on one or more sides, you’ll no longer have the canvas or other border, made with the rug. To conceal the cut edges, as well as create a perimeter around the new headboard, split bamboo works great. Cut lengths of bamboo to be the size you need, then cut the bamboo, lengthways, to create half-stalks. Nail or glue these around the perimeter of the bamboo rug to finish the headboard. No way to cut the bamboo? Purchase it at a large home improvement store and they’ll be happy to oblige.

Your new bamboo headboard will be one you’ll want to show off to visitors. You’ll be so proud of it and, without you telling them, people will never know you made it yourself. It doesn’t look homemade; it looks a bit Asian, or a tad tropical, and really beautiful.
