Candle Sand Images

When I was a kid, my sisters and I had lots of fun making sand candles at the beach. Since we lived close by it was easy to walk down to the beach, dig a large hole, and use it to make a candle. We would heat the wax up over a campfire and, with the wicks set, pour the wax into the hole. When the wax was set we would dig the candle out, wipe off an loose sand, and take our prize candle home. That was a lot of trouble, right? Well, we were kids, so we thought it was fun. Nowadays, you can do many different things when working with sand and candles without any of the hassle. Instead of pouring candle wax into sand you’ll use a different technique to apply the sand, and create the most unusual sand candles.

Back in my sand-candle-making days, I had sand from the beach and that was it. Today, sand is available in many different colors. If that’s not enough, you can also dye sand, and add other elements – like glitter. With so many options you’ll find it really easy to make a candle with any theme you want.

It’s up to you if you make a candle or buy it. You can use most any shape of candle, like a ball, pillar, or votive candle. With the candle chosen, all you have to do is decide on the design you want. When you use a stencil the sand can be applied accurately in the manner you desire. To use a stencil, tape it in place, then apply Mod Podge, or a similar, fireproof adhesive, inside the stencil design.

Pour the chosen sand into a container that will allow you to easily manipulate the candle in it. With the stencil still in place, and the adhesive applied, simply dip the glued area in the sand. Remove the stencil and, if desired, repeat the design, in other places on the candle.

A stencil allows you to create nearly any image on a candle but, if you don’t have one, you can still do some impressive sand designs. Just use tape to create stripes, borders, or other designs. Or, put stickers on the candle, add the adhesive, then dip in the sand. Remove the stickers and you have the images on the candle, with the sand surrounding them.

Any time you apply sand to a candle you should always take a featherweight brush and brush away any loose sand. When you apply a spray-on clear-coat product the sand will stay in place, and look lovely for a really long time.
