California Christmas Memories of an Indiana Girl

Christmas is a holiday in which I want to be with family and friends. A time that should be spent putting up decorations or making sweets to pig out on. It’s that time of year that you should buy or make a gift for the people you love. It’s time to reconnect with family and friends you have lost. Memory making, spreading joy, and showing love are among the great things that should be done.

In my personal experience with Christmas, I didn’t have the presents every year nor did I always have a Christmas dinner, but I always had loving family and friends. There was one part of my family that I didn’t see for about thirteen years. My biological parents lived in California and I lived in Indiana. I didn’t see either of them since I was four. They split up when I was three months old.

In 2009, I was 17 and ready for Christmas to come. I was expecting just to be at home and have some family over. About a week before Christmas my parents gave me a ticket. I asked what was going on and they told me we were going to California to see everyone out there for Christmas. I was so excited and I immediately started packing. They didn’t tell me the biggest surprise. We went to my dad’s house and I got to see my two year old half-sister. I was so happy to visit everyone out there. That’s not even all of the surprises.

A couple of days later they were driving somewhere and I didn’t know where, but it ended up being my mom’s house. I got to meet my other half-sister who was twelve at the time. I saw my older brother too. Among them I also got to see my aunts, grandparents, and cousins. At the Christmas party there, we all just sat around talking and getting to know each other.

There may not have been a huge amount of presents or a huge feast, but I had family. That’s all that mattered to me. To this day, that is my favorite memory. I don’t think any other Christmas memory will top that in my lifetime. I wish all of you a very merry Christmas. Remember to give love and share in the memories.
