Build a Reference List

When submitting applications for review, it’s always important to have the right references for the right job. This is why it’s always a good idea to have a varying reference list to choose from. What can sometimes be difficult is compiling a list from somewhere other than your previous employment.

Friends

Having friends as references is always a good starting point, especially if you’ve ever done any work for them or worked with them on a project of any kind. Although you may be guaranteed a positive reference from friends, you should always be sure they have something constructive to say other than, “Yeah, he’s a great friend.”

Side Projects

If you have done work for neighbors or acquaintances, it may be worth calling them and asking if you may include their name on your list. Although you may not have had a longstanding relationship, if you completed work in a timely manor and the experience was beneficial to the acquaintance, you will have one more reliable name.

Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to prepare for work and job searching in many ways. One is to build a reference list full of both co-workers and job supervisors. Any and all people from a volunteer job who you had a good experience with are great for your reference list. Not only will they be able to tell your future employer what a terrific person you are to work with, but the fact that you volunteer also puts you into a good light in the eyes of employers.

Educators

If you have spent any time in school lately, whether to earn your first degree or expand on an existing degree, educators and administrators at educational facilities are a great addition to any reference list, especially those who acted as advisers on projects or clubs you belonged to during your education.

No matter who makes the cut on your reference list, you should always let the people know you are adding to your references. It gives you a chance to get an idea of what they would say, and it’s simple courtesy. Be sure you have accurate and current contact information each time you use their name, and only include contact information they have approved of.
