Bread Loaf Gift Bag

When the first manufactured loaf of bread hit the grocery store shelves I’ll bet women flocked to the store. No longer would they have to slave in the kitchen for hours, just to turn out a loaf of bread. They could just run down to the store and pick up nearly any type of bread they wanted. Nowadays, many people are going back to making their own bread because it’s so much easier than it used to be. With the bread baking machines available it’s not a problem to whip up a batch of homemade bread. Feel like sharing a loaf with someone? You’ll need a bread gift bag, then. You can quickly sew one up while you’re waiting on the bread to bake.

A hand or dish towel works well to create a gift bag. Since towels vary in size you’ll have to decide how much of the towel you’ll need for the bag. For some hand or dish towels you’ll simply have to fold the towel in half, sew down one side, and then sew across the bottom. For other towels it could be necessary to cut part of the towel off of the bottom, or even to cut the towel in half.

If you’re sewing a hand or dish towel that is hemmed on the sides the finished bag can be a little bulky. However, if you cut the hem(s) off of the towel you’ll greatly reduce the bulkiness. If you’re using a towel that has the fringe on the top and bottom just cut it off of the bottom; it’s optional to cut it off of the top.

A simple ribbon is all you need to tie the bag shut and give it a prettier look. Cut the ribbon to be about two feet long or so, fold it in half, then place the fold on the seam you’ll be sewing. Pin the fold of the ribbon there and, when you sew down the side, you’ll sew the ribbon in place as well. The ribbon should be located a couple of inches down from the very top of the bag.

Bake your bread – or just buy a loaf – and put it into the gift bag. Tie it shut with a ribbon and you’re ready to present it. Any recipient would love a nice loaf of French bread, rye, pumpernickel, or another type. With the beautiful gift bag that goes along with it, it’s quite a nice present, indeed.
