Before the Snow Flies – Winterize!

The cold weather is on its way, and you won’t want to be caught unaware. Here are some tips for getting your home ready for winter.

1 Check to see that windows and doors are sealed tightly. A great deal of heat can be lost through the tiniest of cracks, so make sure you’ve sealed everything up. If you don’t have storm windows and doors, you should invest in some. This isn’t just about saving money. It will also keep bugs and rodents out of your home.

2 Is your heating system winter-ready? Most furnace manufacturers recommend annual inspections by a licensed professional. Also, check all ducts to make sure they are clear of debris, undamaged and connected together well.

3 Insulate any pipes that might be exposed to freezing air. It may seem like a chore, but trust me, you don’t want the water pipes bursting when it’s three degrees below zero and there’s five feet of snow.

4 Speaking of disasters happening in the middle of storms, check to see if any branches have accumulated near your power lines and if so, remove them. Any trees that have grown too close to the power lines should be cut by a professional. Call the power company. They should do it for free.

5 Get indoor and outdoor supplies ready. For outdoors, you’ll need snow shovels, salt and gasoline for your snow blower. Stock up on canned goods, fresh water, batteries and medications. You never know when that winter storm might hit.
