Andy, Barney and Mayberry

Wouldn’t it be nice if every town was like Mayberry, North Caroline? Sheriff Andy Taylor and Deputy Barney Fife kept things straight. There was very little that got past old Barney. He was a sharp knife on the block – – at least he liked to think so.

The Andy Griffith Show was one of the coolest shows ever. There is not an episode I haven’t seen at least a hundred times. Ok, maybe not that many times, but I sure loved the show.

It was full of values and morals. It was full of true to life situations and it always provided the best way out of things.

I guess my favorite character was Gomer Pile, who later had his own hit series call Gomer Pile, USMC. He was a real dummy, but innocently stupid. He always had good intentions. He had a hidden talent outside of being a mechanic at the local filling station. Shazam, he could sing! With him and Barney together, the town was always safe.

Opie was Andy’s little boy. Apparently, Andy’s wife died and that is why Aunt Bee is the homemaker at the sheriff’s house. Opie was a good kid for the most part. He loved his Pa, and hanging out at the jail. He was usually the one faced with oppositions. There was always a lesson learned for Opie at the end of the show.

Who could ever forget Otis? He was the town drunk. He would get his snoot-full and check himself in at the jail. The funniest part about Otis was always when he and Barney would get into arguments. They could crack anyone up. Once in a while, even though Otis was the town drunk – – when sober – – Andy would deputize him in a pinch. Let’s face it he always knew where the steals were.

The Andy Griffin show was just an all-around good show. It has been replaced these days with Law & Order, Criminal Minds, CSI, and COPS. There is nothing peaceful about those shows.

Why can’t entertainment be like it used to be? I miss the good old days.
