Air Layering a Pear Tree

A simple method for reproducing pear tree seedlings from their own branches is called air layering. One advantage to air layering is that the tree will be ready to bear fruit long before a tree that is planted from seed. Another advantage is that the fruit from the propagated tree will be exactly the same as the fruit from the branch that it was taken.

The time to start air layering depends on the type of climate you live in. If you live in an area with a hotter climate, you can begin air layering in late winter and continue into spring. In cooler climates, air layering can be done as late as summer. A good rule of thumb is to air layer when your pear tree begins to grow new leaves.

Begin air layering by picking the perfect branch to air layer. Choose a pear branch that is at least one year old, healthy and disease free. Make a cut into the branch a few inches up from the bottom of the branch. Make another cut about one inch above the first cut, toward the top of the branch. Peel the bark off from around the branch between the two cuts.

Take a handful of tree moss or soil mixed with ash and cow manure and wrap this around the cut that you just made in the branch, forming a ball. Use a piece of clear plastic and wrap it around the moss ball on the branch. Securely tie or tape the ends of the plastic around the pear tree branch. Make sure that the ends of the plastic are tight around the branch so that water and air cannot get in.

Place your branch in an area where it will not be disturbed. Wait 6 to 8 weeks until the roots have formed inside the plastic. Cut off the bottom of the branch underneath the ball of roots. Remove the plastic and plant the branch with the moss still attached to the roots.

Dig a hole and plant the new seedling, covering it with soil just above the ball of roots. Add a thick layer of mulch and water thoroughly. You have now successfully air layered a pear tree.
