A Fan’s Take on Tiger’s Tweets

There was a lot of buzz surrounding a Q&A session that Tiger Woods hosted for fans via his Twitter account on Jan. 20, 2012. I have always been a huge Woods fan, and I think these knew social media outlets are a great way for athletes to communicate with the world.

But some things can certainly go unsaid, even if it is just on your Twitter page.

Whether it be Facebook, Twitter, or whatever social media platform you prefer, these are definitely valuable tools for a famous person to connect with their fans. Woods letting everyone know that he is healthy and ready for the new season was a lot simpler by just typing a few words rather than holding a huge press conference.

I even think it was pretty cool of Tiger to take some time to answer some questions that didn’t relate to golf in anyway. It’s always cool to find out personal little details about your favorite athlete, like what’s the strangest food he or she has ever eaten.

All in all, I had no problem with Tiger’s tweet-fest; I just hope he can stick to what he knows best. It seems like every day I will see a news story that quotes some entertainer from their Twitter page. I don’t care what Russell Simmons has to say about the economy. I don’t care what Ashton Kutcher has to offer about the Penn State scandal. People often go places they have absolutely no business going and it leads to a lot of bad publicity for them.

Tiger pretty much sticks to updating people about what’s going on with his golf game–which is great; I have no problem with that. I just hope he is able to keep himself from commenting on a controversial issue that he is not informed about. Hopefully, he has a PR guy that monitors his tweets before they see the light of day.

My favorite Tiger Woods tweet was after his win on Dec. 4, 2011. He tweeted a link to LL Cool J’s Momma said Knock You Out, that starts with, “Don’t call it a comeback, I’ve been here for years.”

Elias Bond grew up playing golf, and played religiously through high school and college. He still tries to find time to get out there for a round or two now and again, but seems to watch more than play these days.
