63rd Primetime Emmy Awards: ‘Modern Family’, ‘Mad Men’, ‘Downton Abbey’ Triumph (Complete List of Winners)

Jane Lynch of “Glee” hosted the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on FOX. She became the third woman to host this awards show solo. Lynch was impressive from her opening number parodying many of the current TV programs to her intermittent appearances during the three-hour live telecast. Opening the awards presentation was a domination from the Comedy category for “Modern Family.” The first half hour was devoted to the ABC sitcom winning the Best Supporting Actress/Actor, Directing and Writing.

Some of the highlights that were hit or miss came from Charlie Sheen. The audience did not know how to react. He soley presented an award, but wanted to sincerely give his wishes for another successful season to “Two and A Half Men” and its new cast. A definite miss was the hideous musical number midway in the show. The successful digital short from “Saturday Night Live” featuring Michael Bolton did not translate well as a live performance. The other song made no sense and the last number by Akon was more appropriate for the MTV and VMA award shows.

As usual the Emmys is known for its repeated winners year in and year out such as “The Amazing Race” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” It did not happen as much this time around. There were a number of surprised winners who did not dream of winning, so they hadn’t prepared an acceptance speech. “Friday Night Lights” was indeed a crowd favorite when it won not one, but two Emmys. Kyle Chandler won for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series beating out the heavily favorite, Jon Hamm in “Mad Men.”

Other first time winners were Barry Pepper for his role as Bobby Kennedy in the controversial “The Kennedys” miniseries. He beat out heavyweights such as William Hurt, Laurence Fisburne and his co-star, Greg Kinnear. Margo Martindale surprised everone for winning in the supporting acting drama category in FX’s “Justified.” As expected Kate Winslet won for her role in the miniseries “Mildred Pierce.” The big winners of the night were “Modern Family” for Best Comedy Series. “Mad Men” went four in a row for winning Best Drama Series and “Downton Abbey” won Best Miniseries or Movie. For all winners from the telecast and the Creative Arts ceremonies a week earlier here is the entire list of nominees and winners.
